Frequently Asked Questions

The amount of assistance you may receive depends on several factors, including the utility services on your NBU account, demonstrated financial need, usage, available program funding and the timing of your application.

For the program year of August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2027, eligible customers may receive assistance up to three times, or until they reach the maximum available assistance amount, whichever occurs first.

If you have already received assistance twice during the program year, you may be eligible for a third and final assistance payment after completing a financial literacy or energy conservation class offered by the New Braunfels Food Bank. Please review the activity calendar for upcoming class opportunities.

The best way to apply is on the New Braunfels Food Bank website. The easiest method is from a phone or tablet, where you can use your camera to take pictures of the required documentation.

Library staff at the New Braunfels Public Library are trained to assist individuals with the application process. To help ensure a smooth and efficient experience, please bring all required documentation with you when you arrive.

If you anticipate having difficulty paying your utility bill by the due date, we encourage you to apply for Utility Bill Assistance as soon as you receive your bill. Applying early provides more time to complete the application process and determine your eligibility for assistance.

Applications are typically processed within 10 business days after all required documentation has been received. Processing times may vary depending on application volume and whether additional information is needed. Applicants will be notified once a determination has been made.

Once the New Braunfels Food Bank notifies you that your application is eligible, please contact NBU as soon as possible. The NBU Customer Service team will review your account and discuss available options while your utility assistance is being processed.

The program may cover a portion of your utility bill, and you will be responsible for paying the remaining balance. Please ensure the remaining balance is paid according to NBU’s billing timeline and payment procedures to keep your account current. If you still need help after receiving assistance from this program, we encourage you to contact Community Council of South Central Texas or the Family Life Center. You may also find additional resources through ComalCares.org, FindHelp.org, or 211.org.

If you are enrolled in NBU’s Budget Billing or Autopay Program, your account is not currently eligible to receive Utility Assistance. To learn more about eligibility requirements or available options, please contact the New Braunfels Food Bank team.

If your account is currently disconnected, it is not eligible to receive assistance through this program at this time. Please contact NBU’s Customer Service team to discuss options for reconnection and establish a plan for restoring service before your application can be reviewed.

This program can only assist with eligible charges on an active NBU residential account. If you need help with a non-NBU bill, we encourage you to contact Community Council of South Central Texas or the Family Life Center. You may also find additional resources through ComalCares.org, FindHelp.org, or 211.org.
